Well, it's finally here. The VR Box heaset I ordered from dxsoul. $33 and some change shipped, arrived in a little over two weeks. I've been F5-ing the hell out of this subreddit looking for reviews of this thing after /u/fluxtime's post VR Box, just terrific. claimed "VR experience is very good, as good as Gear VR."
Some other threads discussing the VR Box:
- If you are willing to take a risk: VR BOX, a viewer that (possibly) provides 95° - 100° FoV for 6" phones, available for less than USD 25
- Vietnamese unboxing video and a thread discussing it
- Photos and videos by /u/redoutreddit
I'm here to tell you people still sitting on the fence wondering if you should pull the trigger and order one...DON'T. What a massive disappointment, where should I start?
Pros -
- Holds my iPhone 6 Plus with the case on. Hell, it almost looks like they designed the phone tray just for me.
- Solidly built, doesn't feel like it'd be easy to break
Cons -
- Weight - Without a phone installed, this thing weighs in at 14.8oz , almost a whole pound. With the iPhone 6 plus installed, you're looking at 1lb, 6.8oz. That's pretty heavy!
- Small nose notch - Maybe it's my heavy phone or maybe I have a big nose, but i couldn't keep this thing on for more than a minute or 2 before my nose started to hurt. It doesn't cut into your nose, it just pushes it in really hard. I tried adjusting the strap, but no luck with comfort there. More about the straps later
- FOV - Yes, it sucks. My balsa wood opendive headset with 25mm lenses had better FOV. Probably 50-60 degrees at best if you fiddle with the adjustment levers enough. Calling these virtual reality glasses is a more than just a bit of a stretch.
- Straps - Initially i was excited to find that the white plastic piece that ties the straps together was made of a soft, rubbery plastic and not hard, crease-able plastic, but that's where my delight ended. After pulling the elastic through the plastic adjustment buckle, i tried to even it up through the slot on the headset itself, and dislodged it from the headset entirely. After 5 minutes of cursing and swearing I managed to get the frayed elastic strap back on the tabs that hold it. Due to the weight of the headset with my phone installed, there is no amount of strap adjusting that will ever make this thing sit comfortably on my face.
tl;dr - Save your money for something nicer folks, the VR Box is a big letdown. If this is what/u/fluxtime considers to be as good as the gearvr, I'm glad I didn't spend $200 on a gearvr. Luckily, I think he's (or she's) full of shit and might also be a shill for the company that makes VR Box.
If there's something I didn't cover that you want to know, please feel free to ask. I can't guarantee that I'll answer instantly, but I'll try to get back as quick as possible.
